Additional Information

The Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame celebrates the films of 1939 – the 80th anniversary of Hollywood’s Greatest Year in Film. This week, see the classic film “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”, starring Jimmy Stewart, Jean Arthur, and Claude Raines; directed by Frank Capra. Free admission, popcorn and beverage.

The year 1939 has often been called the “greatest year in film history” by film buffs, movie historians, and critics, chiefly due to the inordinate number of notable films released that year. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences nominated ten films for Best Picture. Among them are two of the most iconic films of all time, Gone with the Wind (Best Picture Winner) and The Wizard of Oz. There are several others, however, that are among the top films of Hollywood’s Golden Age, and we will present them during our Classic Film Series: 80th Anniversary of the Greatest Year in Film, 1939.

Most of the films we will present were among those nominated for Best Picture. Some of the others are admired for their lasting appeal and their impact on American cinema over the past 100 years.
